Online training: Introduction to social protection in the Pacific

Social protection (sometimes referred to as social welfare, social security) plays an important role in supporting people throughout their lives. This introductory online training will explore what social protection is, why it matters, and what social protection looks like across the Pacific.
Introducing key social protection concepts, this session will explore how social protection can help reduce poverty and inequality, support people at different stages of life, and help households prepare for and respond to shocks.
Using examples from Pacific countries, the training will look at the different types of social protection available in the region and why having inclusive and accessible systems matters.

What will I learn?
This training explores:
- definitions of social protection
- objectives of social protection policies and programs, along with various mechanisms for implementation
- the risks and vulnerabilities experienced throughout a person’s life cycle and how social protection can effectively address these challenges
- what social protection looks like in Pacific island countries
Who should attend this course?
This training is designed for professionals who are working in or with Pacific island countries, at all experience levels including those who are:
- new to social protection or would like to strengthen their understanding of social protection in the Pacific. No prior knowledge or experience in social protection is required.
- engaged in social protection and related sectors, such as financial inclusion, poverty reduction, economic growth, food security, education, disaster management, and climate change
- from government agencies, international organizations, civil society organisations, academia, and consultants interested in strengthening their understanding of inclusive and shock responsive social protection

What do I need to participate?
To participate in the course, applicants must:
- have access to a computer or mobile device with stable internet connection as this training will be conducted online via Zoom. It is also beneficial to have access to a webcam, however this is not essential
- be proficient in English for learning and engagement
- be able to commit to attending the session We are committed to ensuring an inclusive and accessible learning environment.
